Tsukihime (Visual Novel)

"Can you understand what I am saying, Shiki-kun?"
"...no. Why am I in a hospital?"
"You don't remember, do you? You were involved in a car accident while you were walking. Your chest was stabbed by a shard of glass, and it was unlikely that you would survive."
Very unbefitting of what a doctor would say, yet he says it while still smiling cheerfully.
...terrible. I feel terrible.
"I'm tired. Can I go to sleep?"
"Yes, you should rest. You must focus on recuperating, and not push yourself."
The doctor is still smiling. To be honest, I can't stand that smile anymore...
"Can I ask you something, doctor?"
"What is it, Shiki-kun?"
"Why are there scribbles all over your body? And there are cracks, all over the walls...why are there cracks in the walls?"

.: Story

Tsukihime chronicles the story and life of a teenage boy named Tohno Shiki. As a young boy, Shiki suffered a life-threatening injury. As a result of this injury, Shiki became able to see "death lines" on objects and people; if Shiki traces these lines with a sharp object, the person or object that they belong to will die or be destroyed. Soon after discovering this power, he is given a special pair of glasses by a mysterious woman. While wearing these glasses, Shiki cannot see the lines, and can thus live life as normal. Later, Shiki discovers that he can also see "points" on objects and people; these act as more immediate and powerful versions of the "lines." Eventually, it is revealed that Shiki is not merely killing a person or destroying an object when he cuts its lines or pokes out its points, but is instead removing the meaning of his victim's existence.

The game plot begins during Shiki's high school days. After years away from the Tohno household, which he was banished from after his injury, he moves back home following the death of the head of the Tohno family, Shiki's father. Shiki's sister, Akiha, assumes the responsibility of being the new head, and decides to let Shiki come back. As the story progresses, Shiki gradually discovers his mysterious past, and becomes implicated into strange adventures. Starting from confronting supernatural beings such as vampires (known as True Ancestor (真祖 Shinso) and Flock of Death or Followers of Death (死徒 Shito)) and revealing the reason about his unique ability, The Mystic Eyes of Death Perception (直死の魔眼 Chokushi no Magan)

.: Review

To Western gamers, the popularity of visual novel is not as huge and serious as in Japan mainly because how visual novels emphasize more into the story and never into the gameplay. To make things worse, visual novels receive the same treatment as porn games because of their pornographic element. Among the visual novels that exist in the world, only few gather huge fanbase that even reach the Western audience and one of them is Tsukihime. Even before the game was translated, this game has already gained cult fanbase despite only few actually played it. Tsukihime, like other visual novels, provide reach story with likable characters.

WARNING! This game contains nudity and pornographic scene! Definitely not the kind of game for kids. There are also some scenes in this game that are obviously not for kids (gore and blood). But Mirror Moon patch provides the non-ero version which allows you to play the game without the porn scene.

Visual
Tsukihime is Type-Moon's first visual novel. In other words, it's an old game. The graphic is very simple compared to other visual novels since Type-Moon was just an amateur doujin company back then. However, some CGs actually deliver the message they want to say although being very simple. Some of them portray the mood very nicely and will double your enjoyment of the story. (Score: 8/10)

Gameplay
Nothing much to expect here. Tsukihime is your standard visual novel in gameplay. You read stories. You'll face choices. You pick choice. You continue along with the story. The only thing you need is your finger to click the mouse. (Score: 7/10)

Story
Perfect ten! This is where Tsukihime excels other visual novels or even video games in general. The character has deep personality and you'll be attached to them as the story goes on.
The story takes place in the modern world where vampires still exist. You're Shiki Tohno, a boy that survived an accident and gained an eye that can show the 'death' of everything. One day you met Arcueid Brunestud, the princess of Vampires, and after a gruesome accident took place you decided to help her to fight vampires that terrorize your town. Of course this is only in the nutshell. There are other characters in this game that add more elements to the story. There are two categories of stories in this game, the Moon's Near Side and the Moon's Dark Side. The first deals with vampirism and supernatural element. While the other digs more deeply into the character of Tohno Shiki and the people around him. It's guaranteed that once you entered the main story, you won't be able to stop reading. (Score: 10/10)

Music
The sound and music are also great! I heard some people weren't able to play the music, but at least they can still hear the sound effect. The sound effects fit the mood nicely and it will be much better if you can play the music. (Score: 8/10)

Overall
I highly recommend this for visual novel fans, especially those have known Tsukihime via fanarts, flashes, AMVs, and other fanmade stuffs. It's really worth the hours you spent playing the game.

Overall Score: 9/10
